It may be cooling down in some parts of the country, but it is still hot here in Southern California.
We took a trip a few weeks back to Oak Glen farms to celebrate the beginning of apple season. After living in the south for years and picking apples in cool crisp weather it was definitely strange picking apples when it is 95° outside.
We still had a great time, but man oh man was it sweltering!
The kids especially loved being away from the city for the day and couldn’t resist picking as many apples as they could reach and petting every farm animal in site. It was so relaxing!
After we arrived home with a few gallons of apple cider and more apples than you can shake a stick at we hit a massive heat wave!
I’m talking over 100° temperatures for almost 2 weeks, and since we live by the beach we have absolutely no A/C. Needless to say baking any appletastic fall treats was out of the question.
Meanwhile, logging into any form of social media proved to be super frustrating as everyone else around the world seemed to be eating apple pies, cakes, and tarts.
So, we decided that the best thing to do was to harness the flavors of fall in the coldest way possible and to us that meant apple cider floats! I used the real deal, fresh pressed, apple cider we picked up at the farm for our floats which is more savory than sweet. I suggest if you are purchasing apple cider at the store to use a brand with no added sugar so that the sweetness of the cider doesn’t overpower the float.
Also, if anyone can explain to me why no one has figured out how to get REAL fresh pressed cider into grocery stores I would appreciate it! This having to drive hours out of the city to get my authentic cider fix is a little ridiculous.
- 2 cups fresh pressed apple cider
- 2 large scoops gluten free/vegan vanilla ice cream
- Cinnamon to taste
- Place the apple cider in a large glass add the scoops of vanilla ice cream and sprinkle with cinnamon on top to taste.
